Will Durkee Artist Development Lessons

All Ages · all levels · eastside & central LA

Music lessons that actually turn you into a musician.

No focus on boring scales. We take apart the tracks you love, learn to play them on your instrument, learn to recreate them on the computer, then build towards writing and recording your own.

About

Hey, I'm Will.

I grew up taking music lessons but even though I was obsessed with bands like the Strokes and wanted to be like them one day, I barely made any progress. I slogged through scales and other basics of the “traditional way” to learn guitar, never really making much progress.

It wasn’t until middle school when I became obsessed with Bob Dylan’s “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” and became determined to write my own songs did it start to click. I’d learn song after song of my favorite artists picking up their little tricks and techniques - I felt like I was gathering tinder and dry wood for a fire. Then once I began writing my own songs I was hooked and that has propelled me on the creative journey I am still on today.

Now, I live in Echo Park and am a musician with a solo project ‘wilter’ which recently crossed 1 million streams. I also work as a producer, touring musician, and sound designer. I studied songwriting and computer programming at USC.

As a teacher I teach the way I always wish I’d been taught. Learning your favorite songs and what makes them tick and then from there we move into trying to make your own stuff. I strongly feel if you are not excited while you’re learning it’s just not going to be valuable for your creative journey. Whether you are seven or forty seven I believe this holds true.

How it works

01

Start from your influences

We start with what you're already listening to. No boring scales. We break down how to play your favorite songs on your instrument. Guitar, vocals, synths and more.

02

Cover it, then rebuild it

Once you start to get a handle playing your favorite tracks we focus on production and recording techniques behind the tracks you love. We'll learn how to use recording software on your computer (or even just an ipad or phone is good enough!). Along the way we'll get your simple home recording setup sorted.

03

Write your own

Once the tools feel familiar, we move into original work: songwriting exercises, refining lyrics, and building a whole structured song start to finish. The goal is to light the fire to keep creating.
